Don't Close the Drive-In!!

After nearly 60 years, the Buffalo Drive-In on Harlem Road in Cheektowaga will be closing at the end of the season. Apparently there is a burning need for another medical campus and there are no undeveloped parcels of land or vacant buildings in Buffalo.

Okay, admittedly the land is too valuable to sit unused for most of the year, and the drive-in has seen better days but still - how sad is that?

It was only last year when we re-discovered the drive-in. Taking part in a summer tradition known as "Greyhound Night at the Movies". Friends of ours had been doing this for a couple years and we never knew that dogs were allowed in. After all, Cheektowaga bans them from the park so why not here too? Well, pulling in you discover why it doesn't really matter if animals are in attendance - but that's not the point!

We loaded 2 hounds in the back of the truck, grabbed human and dog snacks and joined 4 other vehicles full of dogs to see "Pirates II". Nice to be out in the open air, passing snacks between trucks. The dogs got a nice nap and we got an escape from the hot confines of our non-air conditioned house.

I say we all go to the last movie of the year and chain ourselves to the rusty marque and refuse to leave! Then again, we'd likely have to sit through the winter until anyone cared. Or maybe they'd simply snap the rusty marque supports to free us. I'm accepting any ideas anyone may have to keep this travesty from occuring. Log them into my comments section and together we can make a difference!

Progress, it's a too edged sword. D and I were just thinking about going to a drive-in movie this year too.

We could always write our Congressman, oh yeah, that's right, they are letting are hospitals be closed to ... hmmm

Well considering they are closing St. Joe's about a mile down the road, it's curious why they wouldn't use that building. St. Joes just did a ton or renovation. So now that can sit empty instead of the drive in. Strange logic.

don't compare drive-ins to hospitals. Closings are the ugly downside to a city that is shrinking. You want quality in your providers. Do not assume that all docs/nurses/facilties are created equal. St Joe's lost to Sister d/t Sisters has a maternity unit. They did too much too late. And quite honestly the qualtiy has not improved but the package is prettier.
Drive ins always look fun in the movies- Grease, Pee-Wee. The picture is hard to see, the sound stinks & there is always a moron next to you smoking like its his last day on earth & yelling at his kids.
How about checking out the outdoor movies on Chippewa this summer? or Shakespeare in the park?

Well for me, the drive in closing is more of a lament than a "let's march on city hall" thing. I admit that for Pirates II I'd like to see it again to really "see" it.

St. Joes can stay open or close - I have no real personal attachment to it. I just think it's funny that you have this facility (St Joes) that's been rennovated and is a mile away and the developers can't use that building? Unless of course they already have plans for sloppy Joes. I figure to see a "For Lease" sign in front of it next year and that would be a shame.
